The opportunity
You will own the vehicle diagnostics capability behind a deployed vehicle connectivity platform. The work centres on capturing and analysing manufacturer-specific data, understanding how different makes, models and variants present diagnostic information and fault codes, and creating the decoding definitions and vehicle profiles used in the field.The role covers the full lifecycle: extending vehicle coverage, authoring and validating decoding logic and fit data, bench and in-vehicle testing, documentation, and technical escalation. What you will do
Diagnostics reverse engineering and authoring
- Capture and analyse CAN bus and diagnostic data to identify manufacturer-specific parameters, diagnostic trouble codes and responses.
- Author, test and release decoding definitions and vehicle profiles across a varied supported vehicle estate.
- Extend coverage to new makes, models and variants in line with commercial priorities.
- Maintain and improve vehicle fit data and connection profiles across OBD-II, UDS and J1939-based diagnostics.
Technical ownership and knowledge
- Take ownership of existing decoding libraries, vehicle profiles and the associated reverse engineering toolchain.
- Document vehicle coverage, decoding logic and investigation findings so critical knowledge is clear, accessible and shared.
- Build vehicle diagnostics capability across the wider engineering team through practical collaboration and knowledge transfer.
Quality testing and support
- Validate decoded diagnostic data, fault codes and fit information on the bench and in vehicles before release.
- Develop and maintain test rigs, recorded data captures and automated checks for decoding definitions.
- Act as the senior technical escalation point for vehicle connectivity and diagnostic-data issues, carrying out root-cause analysis across vehicle, device and decoding layers.
- Work with customer-facing and service teams to resolve field issues within agreed service levels, identify repeat patterns and feed improvements into the roadmap.
Collaboration and continuous improvement
- Support planning, estimation and prioritisation, including requests for new vehicle coverage.
- Partner with firmware engineers where coverage or fixes require firmware changes, and with platform and cloud teams on the end-to-end flow of vehicle data.
- Use AI-assisted analysis and development tools responsibly and in line with agreed engineering practices.
What you will bring
Essential experience
- At least three years of experience in automotive diagnostics, vehicle telematics or a closely related engineering field.
- Hands-on experience capturing and analysing CAN bus data using tools such as CANalyzer, PCAN or SavvyCAN.
- Proven ability to reverse engineer undocumented or manufacturer-specific vehicle data, protocols or binary formats.
- Working knowledge of OBD-II, ideally complemented by UDS (ISO 14229) or J1939.
- Scripting ability, such as Python, for data capture, analysis and engineering tooling.
- A methodical, evidence-led approach to validating decoded data before release.
- Confidence taking ownership of an existing technical body of work, learning quickly and progressing with limited handover.
- Disciplined use of testing, version control and documentation, with clear communication across technical and non-technical teams.
Desirable experience
- Ability to read and navigate C or C++ firmware code.
- Experience in aftermarket diagnostics, retrofit telematics, ECU tuning or a related environment.
- Knowledge of CAN FD, DoIP or manufacturer-specific diagnostic systems.
- Experience building or using vehicle test benches, simulators or hardware-in-the-loop rigs.
- Understanding of vehicle electrical architectures and electric-vehicle diagnostics.
- Experience handling senior technical support escalations or working closely with customer support teams.
- Use of AI-assisted tools for large-scale data analysis.
